Gwyn Downey began her music studies at age 7, and she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Theory and Composition from Ball State University. Her mother was her mentor and she lead her to love music.
She currently plays principal bassoon with the Park Ridge Orchestra and Fox Valley Orchestra. She also has performed for the radio program entitled “Exploring Music” which is a classical radio program broadcasting throughout the United States. She also teaches bassoon at Elgin Community College..
She has performed the Mozart Bassoon Concerto with the Park Ridge Orchestra and the Fox Valley Orchestra.
She has performed with the Rockford Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, The Mozart Festival Orchestra, Illinois Philharmonic, Northbrook Symphony, Evanston Symphony, New Philharmonic and Folks Operetta. She also performs at her church, accompanies church choirs and solo instrumentalists, and is a member of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association (ISMTA).
She has studied bassoon with Homer Pence, Anne Eagleton of Lyric opera, Willard Elliot, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Robert Barris, Northwestern University and Bill Buchmann, Chicago Symphony.
